An STI test or STI consultation can feel stressful. At the STI clinic of Healthcare Hub, we believe it is important that you know exactly what to expect in advance. In this blog, we explain step by step how a consultation works, what you may read or hear, and what you should keep in mind.
Step 1: Preparation and information in advance
Before you book a consultation, you can find clear information on our website about:
- When an STI test is useful and which tests are available;
- Which symptoms may be related to an STI;
- What a window period is (the time between infection and a reliable test).
We use simple language and explain medical terms clearly in our articles and blogs.
Do you still have questions? You can also check our FAQ or send us an e-mail:info@healthcarehub.nl
Step 2: Booking a consultation
You can easily book a consultation online:
Booking is possible at short notice.
During the registration process, you will receive a health intake form which includes questions about your health in general and about your sexual health. This health intake is included in the confirmation mail you receive directly after booking. It is important to fill out the form online before arriving for the consultation in person. This information helps us to prepare the consultation properly. We understand the importance of privacy and ensure a discreet and comfortable process from start to finish. Your health and well-being are our top priorities!
Step 3: The consultation itself
During the consultation (in person):
- The healthcare professional discusses your symptoms, risks, and questions. The nurse may ask you additional questions about your sexual health. We will always ask your permission to discuss sensitive information.
- You receive an explanation of which STIs are tested and why.
- You receive information about the reliability of tests and the best moment to take the test (window period).
Everything takes place in a safe and confidential setting. You can always ask us your questions.
Step 4: Testing
STI tests vary depending on the infection being tested for. Some tests require a urine sample, a blood test, or a swab of a potentially infected area (e.g., the cervix, urethra, or throat). The nurses at the Sexual Health Clinic will recommend the appropriate tests for your situation.
If testing is needed:
- You receive clear instructions on how the test is performed (a urine test or a swab test you can often do yourself);
- Our nurse will withdraw a small amount of blood if this is indicated;
- You are told when to expect the test results.
Step 5: Treatment
If the result is positive:
- We explain which treatment is needed;
- We discuss possible side effects of medication;
- You receive advice on treatment adherence (for example, finishing a full course of antibiotics, when it is better to temporarily avoid sex).
If it turns out that our STI clinic is not the best place for your situation (for example, in cases of severe symptoms, pregnancy, or complex care needs), we refer you to an appropriate healthcare provider, such as your GP or the public health clinic (GGD).
Step 6: Advice on prevention and reinfection
We always pay attention to:
- How to prevent getting infected again;
- Informing sexual partners;
- When it is better to temporarily avoid sex;
- Condom use and other preventive measures.
If you use PrEP or are considering stopping PrEP, you will receive clear guidance on how to start and stop safely.
Step 7: Aftercare and follow-up
After the consultation:
- You know if and when a follow-up check is needed;
- You receive advice about retesting;
- You know when to contact us if you have symptoms or questions.
In conclusion
At the STI clinic of Healthcare Hub, clear information and personal care are central. You know what to expect in advance, there is room for your questions during the consultation, and we continue to support you afterwards. Together, we provide safe, responsible, and accessible STI care.
