Our Frequently asked questions

The Healthcare Hub is there to support all WUR-students. We help to find the right path to care.
For international students the Dutch healthcare system might be very different and can lead to confusion, misunderstandings, or false assumptions.
For Dutch students it can be hard to find the right care in Wageningen.

To help, the Hub offers a free walk-in consultation (no treatment, just information), where experienced nurses guide you in navigating the healthcare system, whether it's about general practitioners (GPs), dentists, medication, specialists, hospitals, or emergency care.

The Healthcare Hub provides Information about:

  • Dutch healthcare structure
  • How to find physical or medical health support (for example: GP, dentist, counselor or student psychologist)
  • Medication & pharmacies
  • How to access care in emergencies

We do NOT provide treatment for physical or mental health issues.

Healthcare Hub offers a free walk-in appointment for WUR-Students to answer your questions and guide you in the right direction.

All consultations are completely free of charge for WUR-Students, both international and Dutch.
You don’t need Dutch health insurance to visit us.
We can explain where to go and how insurance works, but visits to external healthcare providers (like a GP or specialist) may have their own costs depending on your insurance.

You don't need insurance for visiting the Healthcare Hub. Our service is free for all WUR students, both international and Dutch.

If you want to visit external healthcare providers:

  • Health Insurance is not required if you're only studying and already insured in your home country (EU/EEA/Swiss students can use EHIC).
  • Health Insurance is required if you're working in the Netherlands (even part-time).
  • Life-threatening emergency? → Call 112
  • Not life-threatening? → Call your General Practitioner (GP)
  • After hours? → Call the out-of-hours GP service
  • The GP is your first point of contact for most health issues.
  • GPs treat many problems directly and only refer to specialists if needed.
  • Not necessary to register with a GP, but highly recommended.
  • Registration is required before making an appointment.
  • Bring your ID and insurance card on your first visit.
  • Inform your previous GP if changing doctors (to transfer your medical file).
  • Sign up through a registration form. Your registration is completed when you have received a conformation email that you are registered.
  • You need to find a GP in your postal code area.

  • For non-urgent issues (e.g., sleep problems, mental health, chronic illness).
  • Minor issues (like a cold) can be managed with pharmacy advice; only visit if symptoms persist.
  • Appointments are made by calling the GP’s assistant.
  • Don’t be surprised if you're asked to wait a few days to see if symptoms improve on their own—this is common practice.
  • GPs may be conservative with medication, especially antibiotics.
  • If they don’t prescribe right away, it's usually based on medical reasoning, not unwillingness.
  • Dutch GPs follow evidence-based guidelines.
  • Discuss with your GP directly.
  • If unresolved, contact an independent complaints officer via www.skge.nl or call 088 0229190.

Everything is handled confidentially and impartially.
